Whether you’ve already decided to opt for an electric car and are in the middle of preparing your home for it or you’re just considering one in Sparks, you are probably curious what state incentives there are. While there are no Nevada EV tax credits, there are funding and exemptions that will make owning a personal EV or providing a charging station appealing. Whether you are a business owner or you are simply an average driver in the area, Lithia Hyundai of Reno has all the details for you below. Learn more about the Nevada electric vehicle incentives today.

Nevada Electric Highway Program

The Governor’s Office of Energy and NV Energy wants to work with a business or government entity in local communities to build a charging station by funding directly $30,000 upfront towards the permit, installation, and maintenance of that station. If you want to drive more business in Fernley and nearby areas, you may be interested in the Nevada Electric Highway program. Here are all of the qualifications you need to meet to be selected:

  • You are located along U.S. Route 95 between Reno and Las Vegas;
  • Your location has a 24-hour access year-round;
  • The charging stations have to be compatible with the ChargePoint Network;
  • Your location will have two AC Level-2 charging ports and one DC fast charging station;
  • Your business or entity will not require payment from electric vehicle owners for the charging services for five years;
  • Your business or entity will allow NV Energy to monitor statin usage through the ChargePoint Network; and
  • Your business or entity will agree to the terms and conditions of the NV Energy Charging Station Shared Investment Agreement.

Other Nevada EV Fundings & Exemptions

Besides the Nevada Electric Highway program, there are other incentives from the state that you may be able to enjoy near Carson City:

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Reduction Grants

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) provides Nevada’s portion of the Volkswagen (VW) Environmental Mitigation Trust through the Nevada Diesel Emission Mitigation Fund. This fund helps with the replacement or repower of qualified publicly- and privately-owned fleets that are of the model year 2009 or older medium- and heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles. The funding amount will vary based on vehicle, applicant, and fuel type.

Idle Reduction Technology, Natural Gas Vehicle, and Plug-in Electric Vehicle Weight Exemption

If you have a motor vehicle equipped with an auxiliary power unit or other qualified idle reduction technology, it may exceed the maximum gross vehicle weight limit by up to 550 pounds to compensate for the additional weight of the idle reduction technology. For natural gas vehicles and plug-in electric vehicles, they may exceed the maximum gross vehicle weight limit for comparable conventional fuel vehicles by up to 2,000 pounds.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Emissions Inspection Exemption

AFVs are excused from Nevada’s emissions testing requirements. A new HEV is excused from emissions inspection testing for the first five model years. After the five-model-year period, the vehicle must comply with emissions inspection testing requirements on an annual basis.
